M. DisselkampAbstract

Up to now, the Admiranda, sive de Magnitudine Romana, a treatise written by the Belgian philosopher and philologist Giusto Lipsio, published for the first time in 1598, has never been a central point of interest for historical and literary research.

The title, first of all, leads us to believe that the book concentrates on the theme of the greatness of Rome. On the basis of philological methods the treatise aims to demonstrate the impressive size of the Roman Empire and of the Roman urbs, on the economic, military, architectural and moral levels.
