V. Battisti - Taddeo Zuccari and Raphael.
This essay explores the echoes of Raphael
in Taddeo Zuccari’s production, both graphic and pictorial, beginning with
Vasari and examining some common traits identified between the lives of Zuccari
and Raphael. Taddeo’s works do indeed show a constant attention towards
Raphael. This is highlighted in the smallest of details in his works inspired
by his fellow artist from Urbino – some of which are well known and have
repeatedly been confirmed by critics, while others have yet to be validated.
References to Raphael Sanzio are at times precise and
apparent in Zuccari’s final paintings. At other times, he draws from Sanzio’s insights only in his initial drawings, using them
as a solid basis to sketch out his complex work design, before adopting more
personal solutions once he had gained sufficient self-confidence.
