V. Fraticelli – “Le martyre de plusieurs saints”. Some
unedited Cavalcaselle and Crowe’letters and the collecting events of an early
Raphael’s work
After the publication of the first volumes
on the history of painting in Italy, which came out in London between 1864 and
1866, Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle and Joseph Archer Crowe planned to produce
a series of biographies of great sixteenth-century artists. Raphael, his life and works was
published between 1882 and 1885. The work on the sources and the direct
observation of Raphael's works lead the reader to interesting reflections and
discoveries, because Raphael’s life itself and the history of the collections
of his works have never stopped amazing art historians over time. This is
indeed the case of a small work called Le martyre de plusieurs saints by
Crowe and Cavalcaselle, whose collection history will be reconstructed here.
