According to Giorgio Vasari, the young Raphael was led by his father in the workshop of Perugino to learn the art of drawing and painting technique. Many scholars do not agree, however, and think that Raphael has received his first artistic training from his father Giovanni Santi. This is the idea that is ahead of the exhibition organized by the Soprintendenza of Urbino during the summer of 2009. The author of this article, which disagrees with the proposed reconstruction, says it is impossible to speak of the formation of a Raphael without taking into account direct and prolonged contact with Perugino and his workshop in Perugia. He adds that some scholars, initially agreed with the hypotheses developed in the exhibition of Urbino, now they have changed their thinking and have reviewed the position of Giorgio Vasari.
